My show “Interplay" at 12 Degrees has been extended to March 6th. Curated by David McIntosh, the show consists of six fabric works made with recycled fabric over canvas. 12 Degrees is located in the lobby of 15 Beverley Street, just north of Queen in Toronto. I hope you get a chance to see the show! "12 Degrees is very happy to return to our exhibitions schedule with “Interplay”, a solo show of 6 recent fabric works by artist Lindy Fyfe. From November 7, 2021 to January 30, 2022, Fyfe’s works will be on display at 12 Degrees, Monday through Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm.
Fyfe deconstructs second-hand store electric striped stretch knits into a palette of shards, then upcycles her materials into striking new visions. With her complex, rigorous abstractions and geometric patterning, Fyfe’s assemblages echo a range of textile arts, from homemade quilts to Navajo blankets. She also evokes the non-objective illusions of the 1960’s Op art movement as well as early 20th century revolutionary Soviet artist Lyubov Popova’s pure geometry textiles created for utilitarian and egalitarian purpose, which have recently been repurposed as hi-top sneakers courtesy of MOMA’s gift shop. While Fyfe’s work resonates historically, her dynamic non-objective textile works conjure a simultaneously arresting and contemplative vision of the movements and rhythms of our contemporary lives. We would like to thank the artist for her generosity in loaning us her work. We also thank JB Arts and Assistant Curator Patricia Pastén for their support. We request that visitors wear masks while in the gallery space. This is the 11th in a series of exhibitions of contemporary artworks at 12 Degrees." September 12 – November 2, 2014 Opening Reception: Friday, September 12 at 7:00pm, Queen’s Square 1 North Square, Cambridge Ontario FREE Art Bus for the opening of Fibreworks 2014, departing from and returning to Toronto. Reserve your seat early as spots are limited, RSVP with Cherie Fawcett at cfawcett@ideaexchange.org. Bus departs from OCAD, 100 McCall Street at 5:30pm and leaves Cambridge at 9:30pm (ETA Toronto 11:00pm). Fibreworks, now in its 15th edition, is a biennial juried exhibition featuring the work of Canadian artists working in the fibre art medium. The choices are made by authorities in the field - curators, artists, and others knowledgeable about current developments in the medium. This year, Stuart Reid, director/curator at the Rodman Hall Art Centre in St Catharines, and Toronto artist, Hazel Meyer made the selections. The jurors responded to the images submitted along with the statements provided by the artists in order to make their decisions. While various themes may emerge during the selection process, the works are assessed on their individual merit. The Fibreworks 2014 competition attracted over 380 submissions; 24 artists made the final cut and of these, Mylène Boisvert, Marianne Burlew, and Humboldt Magnussen received honourable mentions from the jurors. Since its beginning in 1986, Fibreworks has provided a context for what is happening now by some of the country’s foremost fibre artists and we are proud to provide the opportunity to share these innovative works with our community. The exhibition is also a frequent source for acquisitions to our growing permanent collection. Curated by Rafi Ghanaghounian Show Dates: Saturday June 4th - Sunday June 19th Opening Reception: Saturday June 4th, 6 - 10pm Oz Studio 134 Ossington Avenue, Toronto Hours: Open Tuesday - Sunday, 12 - 6 Contact for more info: rafi.projects@gmail.com Statement: In this exhibition, Fyfe has created works using fabrics that titillate the senses. Vibrant, playful colours alongside strong, textured, bold patterns are shaped individually by stretching in directions intuitively to create one united piece. It's hard not to see a large bowl of mixed candy or perhaps envision blooming tulip fields in Holland or the well manicured lawn of British gardens or the rice paddies in Asia carved on the side of mountains. Fyfe’s history in painting and even longer history as a calligrapher are evident in these abstract fabric works. The use of colour and lines guide these complicated shapes to merge smoothly. “My work has always been process-oriented, an intuitive investigation of colour, materials and movement. Improvisation is also an important element, not quite knowing where I’m headed.” - Lindy Fyfe About the artist: Lindy Fyfe was born in Montréal, but for several years her base has been Toronto. Her visual arts education was completed at The Toronto School of Art in 2003. At one time a professional calligrapher, Fyfe now maintains an active studio practice concentrated on drawing, painting, and fabric constructions. Since 2001 Fyfe’s work has been represented in a number of exhibitions, including at the John B. Aird Gallery, Woolfitt's Gallery, the Etobicoke Civic Centre, ZYPR Gallery, The Burston Gallery, The Art Company, Gallery 744, SPIN Gallery, and the Gladstone Hotel, all in Toronto. In 2010, Fyfe had a solo show at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. Rafi Ghanaghounian Curator I hope you can join me on Sunday, September 12, for the opening of my show at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. The exhibition, curated by David Aurandt, includes a large selection of works on paper, acrylic on board paintings, and fabric constructions. THE ROBERT McLAUGHLIN GALLERY

Perhaps this is because in style and theory it is more a visual poem than a written narrative. If one thinks about it in a poetic way, there are concepts and experiences that effortlessly spring to mind. Fyfe's artwork offers an opulent visual feast for thoughtful contemplation. It is possible to draw comparisons to the Op-Art movement, which flooded the eyes and senses, but Fyfe’s work finds no real direct home within the constraints of style. Fyfe's work is intuitive, explorative and unique in approach. When viewing these visual playgrounds one will become engaged in the work without being prompted to find similarities between it and the real world. Fyfe's purely intuitive explorations are free from the need to make sense —it is poetic in that it enables the viewer to grasp thoughts and meaning directly—but leaves them with the exciting question of what it is exactly they are looking at, what it is they are left feeling. Fyfe describes her own work as "...an intuitive investigation of colour, materials and movement," while she highlights that her own "improvisation is [...] an important element." In this exhibition, you are surrounded by the expressive intent of the artist, and her investigations and explorations. But you also bring with you your memories, your associations to shape and colour, and subconscious ideas about line and movement. It is these encounters in particular that bring the most meaning to the RMG's upcoming exhibition Lindy Fyfe: Confluence. Curated by David Aurandt. THE ROBERT McLAUGHLIN GALLERY
